Washington Women’s Shelter, Inc. offers a variety of school programs. Early prevention is a key in conquering abuse and domestic violence.

Violence-Free Healthy Choices for Kids
A program for elementary school students.

… Violence-Free Healthy Choices for Kids is a prevention program that teaches elementary students alternative choices for handling interpersonal conflicts, school personnel how to identify students living in domestic violence, and parents and kids where to get help for family violence.

… The primary prevention goal is to make these issues easy to talk about
and to teach elementary children healthy resolution skills that will
prevent them from being the next generation of adult abusers and
         victims of family violence.

… The secondary prevention goal is to identify high risk students living
in family violence and provide intervention support groups to give
students safety planning and alternative options for non-abusive
         problem solving.

Hands Are Not For Hurting
An educational program for elementary school age children.

...Two principle facts must be foremost in our minds when educating children about domestic violence. First, we must keep in mind that children from violent homes are far more likely to engage in “at risk” behavior such as alcohol/drug abuse and juvenile delinquency than children from non-violent homes.  Second, children who witness violence at home are likely to repeat the cycle of violence as adults.

“Hands Are Not For Hurting” is an educational program for elementary school age children.  The program is interactive and focuses on alternatives to violence, positive uses for hands and even gives information about helping a friend who may be experiencing violence.

Dating Violence Program for grades 9 - 12.

… Washington Women’s Shelter, Inc.’s Dating Violence Program helps high school students understand and recognize types of abuse in dating situations. We discuss signs of abuse, why someone abuses, why someone stays, myths and facts, and how to get help for you or a friend who may be in an abusive dating situation.
