Education and Training Programs

Washington Women’s Shelter, Inc. offers a variety of school programs.  Early prevention is a key in conquering abuse and domestic violence.  The primary goal of the programming offered is to make these issues easier to talk about and to teach students healthy resolution skills that will prevent them from becoming future victims of family violence.

Hands Are Not for Hitting

This program is designed to identify alternatives to violence as well as constructive ways to use our hands to help others.  The primary age group for this particular program is preschool through 3rd grade.

Bullying is Bad

This program is focused on targeting the growing problem of bullying.  The material covered is divided into various segments:

  • Bullying is Bad (4th - 6th grade)
  • From Bullying to Dating Violence (7th - 8th grade)
  • Cyber Bullying (middle school)

Dating Violence

This program is offered to both high school and college-aged individuals to raise awareness of the rising concern of violence in dating situations. Topics covered are characteristics of unhealthy relationships and ways of identifying potential red flags in future relationships.

Healthy Choices

Healthy Choices is an interactive prevention project focusing on developing a healthy self-image and establishing healthy relationships.  Students are taught to recognize the different forms of abuse; to learn skills to solve problems in non-violent ways; and to recognize options and resources to use in dangerous situations.

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is a growing problem for individuals of all ages.  Through the program at Washington Women’s Shelter, Inc., students discuss what cyberbullying is and the various ways that people bully one another using technological means. Students also determine methods of prevention to deter cyberbullies and are informed of local resources available in the area.

The Dating Violence/Cyberbullying presentation offered through the Education and Training Department of Washington Women’s Shelter, Inc. is a multi-faceted program designed to address the rising concern of controlling behavior in dating relationships.  The primary area of focus is how technology (i.e. cell phones, social networking sites, Internet) can be used as a form of power and control over a dating partner. Students discuss how electronic devices can be manipulated to achieve this control and ways in which to prevent dating violence by utilizing precautionary measures.
