COACHING BOYS INTO MEN
Coaching Boys into Men began in the year 2000 as a media campaign to engage men as fathers, uncles,
teachers, and coaches to teach boys to respect women and that violence never equals strength. The success of this media campaign, and the influence of athletic coaches in the lives of boys and young
men, led to the creation of a sports-based violence prevention tool, the Coaching Boys into Men Playbook. The CBIM Playbook was created in 2004 with counsel from coaches of the National High School
Athletic Coaches Association. This Playbook uses “coaching” as a metaphor to engage athletic coaches to help shape the attitudes and behaviors of their young male athletes.
In order to stop violence against women, men must also step forward and declare that domestic violence is a crime. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 24 million
children in America--one out of three-- live in biological father-absent homes. With this in mind, CBIM enlists the help of the only constant male figures available to many growing boys...their
coaches.
Recently, DVSSP was approached by Leadership Washington County (LWC) for a group project request. LWC is a program intended to educate prospective community
leaders, with the goal that participants become effective leaders through involvement on the boards of the non-profit organizations existing in our county. During the months of September 2010
through May 2011, DVSSP is fortunate to have a group of enthusiastic and dedicated individuals from LWC working to implement the “Coaching Boys into Men” program into local
schools. Thanks to the hard work of our Leadership Washington County committee, 6 out of the 14 school districts have already endorsed the curriculum for their schools and shared the contact
information of their athletic directors, so we are on our way!
Remember, it is never too early to teach children about respectful and non-violent relationships because..love shouldn’t hurt. For more information on the
Coaching Boys into Men program or to schedule a “Dating Violence/Cyberbullying” presentation, please contact the Education and Training Department at 724-223-5477.
